An exceptional example of the Takada school, featuring a beautifully refined jihada, vivid utsuri, and a remarkably bright hamon with intricate activity.

This elegant katana is attributed by the NBTHK to the Takada school of Bungo Province and dates to the late Muromachi period, an era closely associated with Japan's turbulent Sengoku (Warring States) period.

The Takada school flourished from the Muromachi through the Edo period, producing swords renowned for their practical qualities and accomplished craftsmanship. Its smiths played an important role in meeting the demand for reliable weapons during the age of the samurai.

This particular blade is an excellent representation of the school's refined workmanship, combining a graceful overall appearance with a remarkably active and beautifully preserved temper pattern.

Blade Characteristics

The blade displays a tightly forged itame-hada (wood-grain steel pattern), complemented by clearly visible utsuri, a subtle and highly desirable shadow-like reflection within the steel.

The hamon is based on a medium-width suguha (straight temper line), enriched with small gunome and ko-midare variations. Numerous delicate ko-ashi and yō appear throughout the temper pattern, creating exceptional visual depth and complexity.

Toward the tip, the hamon develops into a more dynamic and pronounced irregular pattern, accompanied by beautifully formed sunagashi—fine, flowing lines within the hardened steel that resemble drifting sand.

The exceptional brightness of the hamon, combined with the intricate activities in the steel, makes this a particularly attractive example of late Muromachi Takada workmanship.

The blade is accompanied by an elegant pair of matching koshirae ornate mounting, featuring richly decorated metal fittings and lacquered scabbards with delicate gold floral motifs. Together, they create a beautifully coordinated presentation suitable for a distinguished Japanese sword collection.

This katana is accompanied by an NBTHK Hozon Token Certificate, issued by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, officially recognizing the blade as an authentic Japanese art sword attributable to the Takada school.
