Specifications

  • Construction: Shinogi-zukuri
  • Tang: Ubu Nakago (original, unshortened tang)
  • Hamon: Midare-ba (irregular temper pattern)

Moriyuki of the Fujiwara Takada school was an accomplished swordsmith active in Bungo Province during the middle Edo period. He is particularly known for his skillful execution of gunome-midare and togari-ba temper patterns, both highly appreciated by collectors of traditional Japanese swords.

This blade displays an exceptionally attractive and energetic hamon featuring a wide and vibrant gunome-choji midare, interspersed with sharp togari-ba elements. The pattern is further enhanced by striking tobiyaki (isolated hardened spots), creating a dynamic visual appearance along the cutting edge.

The combination of its broad and active temper line, elegant craftsmanship, and original signature makes this sword a fine representative work of the Takada tradition. Certified by the NBTHK as a genuine Japanese sword worthy of preservation, it offers collectors an excellent opportunity to acquire an authentic Edo-period blade with both historical significance and strong aesthetic appeal.

This blade has Hozon paper certification as a "Well-Preserved Sword" from the NBTHK (Japan Sword Preservation Society), highlighting its enduring beauty and historical value.

Comes in a complete set of stunning antique, ornate mounting, including all metal fittings and an open-work Tsuba hand guard finished with gold. A shirasaya wooden holder is also included.

Of particular note is the tsuba, forged in iron and adorned with finely executed gold-inlaid chrysanthemum and scrolling vine motifs. The deep, time-softened patina of the iron provides a dramatic backdrop for the subtle brilliance of the gold decoration, evoking the refined taste of the Edo-period warrior aristocracy. Its understated elegance perfectly complements the blade, reflecting the Japanese aesthetic ideal that true luxury is expressed through restraint rather than excess.

The blade comes with a Certificate of NBTHK Japan Sword Preservation Society - Hozon Paper (Well-preserved sword)
